Leadership and Justice

The challenges we face as a community are daunting. Increasingly, we are called upon to:

  • Provide high quality legal services in the face of both level or reduced funding and increased client need;
  • Move our programs or teams in new directions to respond to emerging client needs and issues;
  • Recruit and retain capable, committed and diverse staff and create environments in which they can continue to grow and develop;
  • Build relationships with new partners and unlikely allies in order to advance our clients’ interests;
  • Respond effectively to funders looking for specific indicators of how our advocacy makes a meaningful difference in our clients lives.

These and other challenges call upon us to exercise effective leadership – to anticipate and develop innovative, strategic and decisive responses to the many complex challenges and opportunities our community faces.

In this training, you will have opportunities to apply new leadership concepts and skills to your actual work and to consult with fellow participants and trainers on specific leadership questions and issues. To accomplish this, you will be asked to bring to the training an actual leadership initiative you are currently engaged in or hoping to pursue and to complete a pre-training assignment in preparation for the course.

Who should attend? The Leadership & Justice training is intended for those of you who:

  • Have formal leadership responsibilities by virtue of your position or title;
  • Fulfill leadership roles in relation to specific initiatives or projects within your program or the community at large;
  • Seek to develop skills to prepare for future leadership roles within or on behalf of your program.

Expected outcomes: By the end of the Leadership & Justice training, you will be able to:

  • Utilize an expanded set of skills and tools to inspire and mobilize others, work across differences, build and effectively use a network of relationships and ensure that all key stakeholders can participate fully and effectively in group processes;
  • Develop successful strategies and implementation plans to deliver on desired results;
  • Move forward successfully on the leadership initiative you brought to the training.
