Center for Legal Aid Education

2008-2009 NE Leadership Institute

New England’s second Leadership Institute began in October 2008, just as the regional and national economies began to plummet. Entering 2009 with drastic funding cuts, New England legal services providers struggled valiantly to balance their budgets, protect staff positions and respond to increased client needs. Some programs lay off staff early on while others cut salaries and work days to preserve jobs. As newer attorneys, many fellows faced imminent lay-offs and carried this uncertainty with them into the Leadership Institute.

Yet, throughout the fiscal storms that characterized the year, both fellows and mentors found a safe harbor within the New England Leadership Institute.“ Going to the Leadership Institute retreats has felt like a gift, a ‘time out of normal time.’ It has provided an opportunity to take a step back from my day to day work, and look at the bigger picture, and how my daily work can work towards larger social justice goals. I always returned from the retreats feeling buoyed and inspired,” says Amy Eppler-Epstein, a New England Leadership Institute mentor. The Institute also provided a context for examining a number of leadership challenges brought to a head by the fiscal crisis such as how to maintain staff focus and morale in times of crisis, readjust program priorities to respond to increased client needs, and sustain hope amidst so much uncertainty and loss.
