Legal Aid Training Network
CLAE belongs to an exciting community of organizations that provide continuing legal education and professional development opportunities to legal aid programs. Some of the other organizations that provide these services are listed below.
- Benchmark Institute - Benchmark Institute is a non-profit training and performance development organization dedicated to eliminating poverty and ameliorating the effects of injustice. It provides innovative training, performance tools and learning expertise for public interest lawyers, advocates, clients and others whose work requires legal knowledge.
- Committee on Regional Training (CORT) - CORT is a cooperative effort of legal services programs in Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia to provide high quality training to legal services staff.
- Management Information Exchange Training Calendar - MIE provides subscribers with training opportunities, fundraising consulting, management consulting, a resource library and the MIE Journal. MIE offers subscribers practical information and assistance in managing, supervising, planning, priority setting, working with staff, increasing pro bono efforts, building effective boards of directors, avoiding employment law problems, collective bargaining, using technology, training and developing new resources.
- National Defender Leadership Institute - The National Defender Leadership Institute (NDLI) facilitates a national network of public defense and assigned counsel leaders and managers. Through its information network, the NDLI promotes the exchange of ideas and resources among defenders and connects them to peers and mentors in the field. The Nile’s leadership and management training programs enable leaders to maximize productivity from finite resources and build advocacy skills to ensure defenders are co-managers of the criminal justice system.
- National Legal Aid & Defender Trainings & Conferences - Trainings include:Substantive Law Conference, the nation's most comprehensive training in poverty law and trends for advocates in an array of specialty areas; The Litigation and Advocacy Directors Conference for advocacy leaders and managers; The Equal Justice Conference, presented in partnership with the American Bar Association, for advocates who work in many sectors of the equal justice community legal aid programs, pro bono projects and practitioners, court-annexed pro se clinics, law school clinicians, hotline providers and others. For defenders, NLADA offers: Life in the Balance, providing skills, strategies and science for defenders and mitigation specialists in capital cases; The National Defender Leadership Institute for leaders and managers of defender offices and assigned counsel programs; The Defender Advocacy Institute, a client-centered trial skills program for defenders and assigned counsel; The Appellate Defender Training for indigent defense practitioners.
- National Legal Aid & Defender Association Leadership Forum - An online resource featuring speeches, essays, reports and other commentary from equal justice leaders -- both civil and defender -- from around the country.
- National Technology Assistance Project (NTAP) Technology Trainings - NTAP provides technology services (training, information, and assistance) to the poverty law community to support the effective use of technology initiatives that benefit clients and our work on their behalf. With a consortium of technology and management "experts" (the "Technology Consortium"), NTAP provides assistance to programs for free or low-cost rates on specific technology issues. NTAP provides services to the poverty law community.
